Mother’s Day in quarantine: Alternative celebration ideas
This year, Mother’s Day, like everything else, will look a little different than usual. But with some creativity and forethought, no social distancing or safer-at-home restriction can stand in the way of mom receiving the royal treatment she deserves – and experiencing the full extent of your love and appreciation.
More than ever, flowers and natural elements should take a starring role.
The importance of botanicals on mental health
It seems almost too obvious to state – social distancing and being cooped up indoors are taking a toll on the mental health of all of us. We find ways to cope, to adapt. We watch Netflix to the end and back again. But we still feel stressed and on edge.
Natural elements in the house can help mitigate some of that anxiety. Countless studies have shown that viewing and having regular interaction with nature – even something simple like garden bouquets – can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous systems, or the systems that give you a sense of meaning.
Flowers also invoke calming feelings and provide numerous other physiological and psychological benefits. When you’re forced to remain distant from social interaction, natural interaction can provide a little bit of catharsis.
Flower shops might be limited, but flowers are still a must
Many flower shops are operating under restrictions. The old tradition of walking into your neighborhoodflorist on Mother’s Day eve and selecting the most alluring array isn’t going to work this year. And while grocery stores are still open, Mom definitely deserves better than a dozen cellophane-wrapped Pick ‘N Save roses (no offense, Pick N’ Save).
So if you’re looking to shower mom with bouquets of beautiful botanicals, your options are limited. But options still exist. Here’s what you’re working with:
You can make mom feel especially special this year by doing your own floral heavy lifting. Pull some of the flowers that are growing in your backyard – or take the kids on floral foraging hunt (maybe it helps to call it a “scavenger hunt”) through a wilderness preserve or park near your house. Select pretty,
healthy flowers as well as other natural elements to complement them: branches, ferns, twigs and whatever else strikes your fancy.
Bleach Alternative Flower Food Recipe

• 1 qt. lukewarm water
